The People’s Potato is looking for a new collective member!
1 position at 18 hours/week
Remuneration: $25.00 per hour
Our primary activity is to serve a daily vegan lunch to about 500 people at the Concordia University SGW campus. We are a worker-run organization and decisions are made collectively through consensus-based decision making. Our work is guided by our organizational values of: Solidarity, Anti-oppression, Learning, Respect, and Sustainable work practices.
Individuals hired will cook, clean, and pick up food donations; many tasks require heavy lifting. Collective members will take on 3 to 5 shifts each week (4-5 shifts for full-timers or 2-3 for part-timers) and will complete portfolio work, such as organizing workshops, coordinating volunteers, stocking and organizing the kitchen, administration, finance, etc. The current position available is considered part-time. Portfolio work will be determined based on the Collective’s current needs, while taking into consideration the interests and skills of the new hires.
Contracts typically begin in mid-August, end in mid-May, and are renewed on a yearly basis. We are seeking applicants who are able to make a minimum one year commitment. Work schedules are flexible, however collective members are expected to be available most weekdays, between 8:30am and 3:30pm. Additionally, we have a weekly collective meeting, of which the day will be decided together, that is scheduled on a weekday, from 3:30 - 5:30pm.

The People’s Potato values life experiences and labour done outside of formal school or work environments. Please do not hesitate to let us know about any experience that you have – whether in your community, family, or friendships - that you feel could be relevant to working at the Potato, even if you would not normally put it on a CV.
Transparency and Work Environment
We acknowledge that the People’s Potato has been a historically white-led organization. In the past several years, the number of people of colour, as well as trans people, has shifted to a larger proportion of the collective. However, this does not guarantee a change in the structural and cultural makeup of the organization, shaped by its history. Through our hiring process and beyond, we aim to shift the structure of our organization to support the needs and initiatives of marginalized people.
While applying for this position, we highly recommend considering that every day we welcome over a dozen volunteers for both drop-in and scheduled shifts in the kitchen. A large part of the work we engage in as a collective is therefore a balance between managing day-to-day group dynamics in the kitchen and adapting our practices to ensure that harmful and oppressive behaviours are dealt with as immediately as possible. This means that our work includes addressing potentially triggering and stressful topics and taking initiative to strengthen our skills around teamwork, harm reduction, and conflict de-escalation.
How to apply
Instead of sending a cover letter with your application, we are asking those applying to fill in the questionnaire linked below where you will be able to attach your C.V./resume.

The workers of the People’s Potato recognize that their work takes place on unceded Kanien’kehá:ka territory. The Island of Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) is known as a traditional gathering place of many other Indigenous nations. While our daily work within this institution (Concordia University) remains complicit in the ongoing colonisation of these lands, we pledge to prioritize supporting events, gatherings and protests hosted by Indigenous-led grassroots groups and organisations fighting for and towards decolonization.Pronunciation guide : Kanien’kehá:ka : gan - yea - ge - ha - ga, Tiohtià:ke : jo - ja - gay
