The People's Potato Collective
Interested in Volunteering?

The People’s Potato would not be able to produce meals for over 400 hungry students and community members without the generous help of our volunteers. We NEED you! Volunteers can help in our kitchen for however long they like, any time between 9am and 3pm, Monday to Thursday, during the fall and winter semesters. By helping out, you have the perk of not having to wait in line for your lunch and can instead eat in our serving area. It’s a great opportunity to learn about vegan cooking and meet many wonderful people!
Options
1. Cooking
Every weekday morning during the fall and winter semesters (Sept-Dec and Jan-Apr) from 9am until 12:30pm we need help with washing, peeling and chopping veggies in order to prepare our soup, stew and salad. Just come to our kitchen and we will be happy to show you the ropes!
2. Serving on the Line
We always need people to help us serve the meal from 12:30 to 2pm.
3. Dishes And Clean Up
From 12pm to 3pm we need help washing dishes and cleaning the kitchen. Bring a friend or some music to play and watch the time fly!
4. Garden
The People's Potato Garden is located behind the Loyola campus. Every spring, we plant seedlings from the Concordia Greenhouse in our garden. Our garden thrives on and depends on the work of volunteers every summer. If you are interested, please email us at peoplespotato@gmail.com.
General Volunteer Guidelines
Interested in volunteering in our kitchen or garden? We welcome one and all, but have a few guidelines on how to operate in our kitchen space and garden.
1. Absolutely no racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic, or transphobic comments will be tolerated in this kitchen or garden. If you make one of these comments, you may be asked to leave.
2. Please don’t wear culturally appropriative hairstyles and clothing (e.g. dreadlocks on a white person). We try to make our space safer for our racialized volunteers. If you cannot comply, you may be asked to leave.
3. Please don’t assume anyone’s gender. When referring to another volunteer, make sure to use the pronoun ‘’they’’ until you find out that person’s pronoun.
4. Please be mindful and respectful of everyone’s capacities and abilities to do work. We have volunteers with different developmental abilities, but they all work very hard to help us prepare our meals, clean our kitchen, and tend to our garden!
5. That being said, please be mindful of your own capabilities and don’t work on tasks that you don’t feel comfortable with.
6. Only touch people with their consent. The Potato is a great space to meet new people and make new friends but make sure to check-in before entering someone’s personal space.
7. Avoid prolonged contact (i.e. hugging, kissing, etc.) in the middle of the kitchen. Keep in mind that the People’s Potato is a kitchen environment. Stay alert around potentially dangerous sharp and hot moving objects.
8. Be mindful when talking during tasks. We encourage volunteers to socialize but be mindful of time-sensitive tasks and avoid leaving tasks for only other volunteers.
9. Check in with a collective member, if you feel comfortable to do so, if you feel hurt or unsafe about something that happens at the Potato. We will do our best to address the situation in a way that you feel comfortable with.
10. Have fun and come again!
The staff of the People's Potato has the right to ask any volunteer to leave if they cannot comply with these guidelines. If you have any questions about them, don't hesitate to ask. If you have any inquiries or concerns about volunteering with us, please talk to one of our staff, or ask for the Potato volunteer coordinators.
People's Potato Scent-free policy
Out of consideration for people who are sensitive to scents and who may have adverse reactions if exposed to them, please do not wear heavily scented products in the kitchen. If you have scented products with you, please take care not to open them in the kitchen and do not apply them immediately before entering the kitchen. This includes cologne, perfume, essential oils, scented hair gel, lotions and other other products scented with chemicals or concentrated natural scents.
